One of the area's earliest settlers. 1855 tax records listed him for the east half of the Southeast 1/4 of Section 30, 80 acres, assessed value $1000 & the east side of the southeast 1/4 of the Northeast 1/4, 26 acres, assessed value$200. VanSyckle sold 3 acres of his land for the Clarkston Union Cemetery (which later became Lakeview Cemetery ). The 1872 map of the Village shows the footprint of a rectangular building on the southeast corner of Dixie Highway & White Lake Rd. There are no reports yet available about this building's appearance. Tax records of 1858 cited assessed values which seem to indicate the existence of a building. If this was VanSyckle's home it was probably a Greek Revival style building, if it had a style at all. The property passed to Ephriam Addis by 1876. The assessed did not change. However, Addis is credited with the construction of the Gothic Revival style house which stood on the lot for the next 100 plus years until it was moved to 180 N. Main.
